Gračišće
Gračišće, the center of the eponymous municipality and a settlement of urban character, is located near Pazin at an altitude of 290 meters. Its roots trace back to ancient times, with the Gauls giving it the name Gallignana over 2,000 years ago before it was renamed Gračišće by the Slavs. Preserved medieval structures and monuments, such as the Chapel of St. Anthony, highlight the historical significance of Gračišće. Visitors can admire its fortifications, Romanesque gates, and Renaissance tower, immersing themselves in the medieval past of the town. The Church of St. Mary on the square, with its Baroque lodge and frescoes from the 15th century, offers insight into the religious and artistic heritage of Gračišće.
The name of the nearby hill Perunčevac reflects the heritage of the ancient Slavs, who worshipped the god Perun there. It is believed that this place was dedicated to the god Perun - the god of justice, war, and weaponry, thunder, and lightning. The symbol of Perun, the thunderbolt, can still be seen on the lintels of houses. Perunčevac Hill, standing at 469 meters high, is named after the deity Perun, and the road through it leads to the Chapel of the Holy Family in Gračišće.
With its elevated position, Gračišće offers spectacular views of Istria, inviting travelers to immerse themselves in its endless enchantment.
