Poreč

Poreč has been inhabited since prehistoric times and in the 2nd century BC, the Romans built a castrum on a small peninsula, which today forms the core of the old town. Initially a military camp, Poreč later became a fortified city, evolving into an important administrative and economic center known as Colonia Iulia Parentium. The old town of Poreč retains the layout of the ancient Roman castrum, with the main streets of Decumanus and Cardo Maximus remaining unchanged. Under the rule of Byzantine Emperor Justinian, Poreč reached its peak, and the Euphrasian Basilica, a cultural monument, attests to that splendor. Dating back to the 6th century, the basilica is a masterpiece of Byzantine art, with mosaics considered among the most beautiful in the world. The entire complex is listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The medieval period has left its mark, with landmarks such as the Romanesque House, Pentagonal Tower, Gothic Tower, Canonica, Vergottini Palace, and the Great and Neptune's Temple still bearing witness to the rich past.

Along the beautiful coast of Istria, near Poreč, you'll find intriguing remains of ancient villas on the peninsula of Lorun and the prehistoric hill fort of Picugi. In addition to Picugi, these hills are home to the hill fort of Veliki Sveti Anđeo, while some consider Mali Sveti Anđeo the only known megalithic circle in Croatia, making them significant sanctuaries from the Middle Bronze Age. These historical sites offer insight into the region's rich past, while Aquapark Aquacolors Poreč, located just 2 km south of the city, offers unforgettable fun for all ages with 17 different attractions, including slides, water playgrounds, and much more.

With its wealth of cultural heritage and dynamic contemporary offerings, Poreč remains an irresistible destination that perfectly blends rich history and vibrant modernity.
