Lupoglav
Surrounded by the Primorje-Gorski Kotar County and Istrian municipalities, Lupoglav proudly stands out with its strategic position, serving as a vital point where Istria connects with the rest of Croatia. Its landscape is a tapestry of contrasts, where "White Istria" and "Gray Istria" intertwine.
The significance of the Lupoglav municipality lies not only in its transportation hub but also in its natural beauty and cultural heritage, preserving untouched landscapes of the "Učka" Nature Park and the ancient legacy of surrounding areas. Boljun, an ancient town in northeastern Istria, captivates with its medieval architecture, especially the castle offering a magnificent view of the Boljunčica valley and the Učka mountain massif. Dolenja Vas is first mentioned in 1523 in the urbarium of the Lupoglav estate as Nidrdorff (Niederdorf), previously part of the rural area of the Lupoglav castle together with Gorenja Vas.
Lupoglav, with its first records dating back to the 11th century, abounds with a rich history that stretches into prehistory. Throughout the centuries, the castle had various rulers, including Aquileian patriarchs, Counts of Gorizia, and families such as Habsburg, Eberstein, and Herberstein, among many others. Over the centuries, it witnessed the rise of feudal lords like the Brigido family, whose castle symbolized authority and shaped the fate of neighboring settlements.
The nature around Lupoglav offers extraordinary attractions such as the Učka Nature Park with rich vegetation and spectacular views. Vela Draga delights with its canyon and high cliffs, while Ćićarija stands out with its white limestone cliffs and mountain trails for exploration. From its medieval roots as a fortified stronghold to its present-day allure as a haven for nature lovers, the history and nature of Lupoglav enchants all visitors.
