Svetvinčenat

This idyllic town carries three different names - Svetvinčenat, Savičenta, or San Vincenti, all stemming from the name of the patron saint, St. Vincent, a Spanish martyr. The nucleus of Svetvinčenat was formed around the Romanesque church of St. Vincent at the cemetery, representing the oldest monument, adorned with wall paintings that testify to the rich cultural history of the place.

The center of the town consists of a rectangular square, enriched with the early Renaissance parish church of the Annunciation of Mary and a baroque town lodge. Many cultural events take place in the heart of this historic square, notably the Medieval Festival. However, the true cultural splendor of Svetvinčenat is revealed in the Morosini-Grimani Castle, a masterpiece of Venetian architecture. This castle, which was an important fortress of the Venetian army, today stands as one of the most impressive buildings of its time in Istria. With its towers and ramparts, the castle proudly overlooks the surrounding landscape, bearing witness to the past and power of this region.

In addition to its cultural richness, Svetvinčenat offers beautiful natural attractions, such as the lavender fields in the village of Pekici, which attract visitors with fragrant lavender fields and traditional Istrian gastronomy. The Pekici excursion site, with its 36,000 lavender plants, provides an unforgettable experience and the opportunity to taste a variety of lavender products.

Svetvinčenat has become a hub of cultural events in Istria, such as the Dance and Non-Verbal Theater Festival, Cheese Festival, and Medieval Festival, rightfully considered one of the most significant cultural centers of this beautiful peninsula.
