Ližnjan

With its stunning 27.6-kilometer coastline and the first mention of the town dating back to 1149 when it was called Lisianum, the municipality of Ližnjan abounds with archaeological and cultural treasures. The significance of this place extends from the Byzantine to the Roman period, serving as a crucial transportation hub between Budava Bay and Cape Premantura.

The historical roots of this area trace back to the 12th century, with the name Ližnjan likely linked to a Roman landowner, Licinius. Šandalja and Nezakcij are rich archaeological sites on the edge of the Valtura Field, while Sveti Stjepan is an ancient coastal settlement north of Kala Cove. Svetica is a high hill with ancient remains, while Kostanjica is an abandoned medieval village preserved only in the form of a 16th-century church.

The seabed with submerged ships and ancient remnants attracts divers and enthusiasts of the underwater world. The wreck of the cruiser Cesare Rossarol, sunk near Cape Marlera, bears witness to a tragic event from World War I. At a depth of 50 meters, the wreck is divided into two parts, and a monument at Munat Veliki Cape pays tribute to the fallen sailors. Punta Uljeva A and B, two ancient shipwrecks near Kuje port, preserve remnants of amphora cargo from different periods, traces of past trade voyages that have remained underwater forever.

Ližnjan, with its rich historical and archaeological heritage, along with its protected harbor and spectacular sea and island views, offers an unforgettable experience to history enthusiasts and lovers of the deep sea.
